Who writes the "best AEO tools" lists? We checked all six.

Every AEO tool comparison ranking on page one of Google was written by a company that sells an AEO tool. One of the six told its readers. Here is the evidence, with links, so you can check it yourself.

The problem with searching for the best AEO tool

You search for the best AEO tool. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization, the work of getting your business mentioned inside ChatGPT and Google's AI answers rather than only in the blue links below them.

Page one gives you six comparison articles. They look independent. They carry scoring tables, pricing grids and phrases like "Tested & Ranked."

Every one of them was written by a company selling a tool in the list.

You are reading a sales page formatted as a buyer's guide, and in five of the six cases nothing on the page tells you so.

The 7 best AEO/GEO tools for 2026

Best AEO Tools 2026: 12 Answer Engine Platforms Compared

The title promises 12 platforms. The meta description says "we compared 11 AEO tools." The twelfth is cloro, placed in its own section headed "If you want the raw data instead of a dashboard," framed as the alternative to every tool ranked above it.

Why this matters more in AEO than it did in SEO

Traditional search gave you ten links and left the judgement to you. AI answers return one recommendation and drop the rest.

When ChatGPT summarizes the best AEO tool, it reads the same six articles you found. Vendor-authored rankings become the training signal for the answer millions of people receive.

We believe this is the sharpest conflict of interest in software search right now, and no directory is correcting it. A category where every buyer guide is written by a seller has no independent record at all.

Our own conflict, stated plainly

RankJudge sells no software. There is no RankJudge tool to rank first, which removes the specific bias documented above.

We do earn a commission when a reader buys through our links. Commission rates play no part in rankings, runners-up appear whether or not they pay us, and any tool we recommend has to earn the slot on fit. Our affiliate disclosure spells out the whole arrangement, and our methodology shows the criteria.

Judge us the same way we judged them.

Frequently asked questions

Who writes the "best AEO tools" articles that rank on Google?

Mostly the vendors themselves. We checked six of the highest-ranking AEO and AI SEO tool comparisons in September 2026. All six were published by companies that sell a tool in the category they were ranking.

Is it wrong for a software company to publish a comparison that includes its own product?

Not by itself. It becomes a problem when the reader is not told. One of the six pages we checked, Scrunch AI, states openly that the guide comes from a vendor on the list. The other five leave the reader to work it out.

Does RankJudge have the same conflict?

A different one, and we state it on every page. RankJudge sells no software, so we have nothing to rank first. We do earn affiliate commissions when readers buy through our links, which is disclosed on our affiliate disclosure page. Commission rates play no part in how tools are ranked.

How can I tell if a comparison article is vendor-written?

Check the domain against the tools in the list. If the site selling a tool also publishes the ranking, you are reading marketing. Then check whether the article says so anywhere above the fold.

Does vendor-written mean the information is wrong?

No. Several of these articles contain accurate pricing and feature detail. The bias shows up in ordering and framing rather than in facts. The vendor decides which criteria matter, and the criteria that matter tend to be the ones it wins on.

How was this audit done?

Each article was fetched directly, then parsed for its ranked headings and for how the publisher placed its own product. Findings, quotes and dates are listed above with links to every source so you can check them yourself.

Method

Six articles ranking for AEO and AI SEO tool comparison queries were fetched directly on September 4, 2026. Each page was parsed for its ranked headings and for how the publisher positioned its own product. Where rankings render through JavaScript and could not be read, that is stated in the finding rather than assumed. Quotes are verbatim. Every source is linked above.
