SEO Glossary
Common terms you'll encounter when choosing AI SEO tools. Clear definitions, no fluff.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
Optimizing content to rank in AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, not just Google. Focuses on factual accuracy, cited sources, and structured data that LLMs can reference.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Broader term for optimizing content across generative AI platforms. Includes ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and other LLM-powered search systems.
AI Overview
Google's AI-generated summary that appears at the top of search results. Summarizes information from web results without the user clicking through. Reduces organic CTR for traditional links.
CTR (Click-Through Rate)
Percentage of people who see your link in search results and click it. AI Overviews reduce CTR because users get answers without clicking organic results.
NavBoost
Google ranking factor based on 30-second user engagement. Measures how long users interact with your content. Critical for homepage and opening sections.
originalContentScore
Google ranking field (0-127) that rewards original research and unique perspectives. Generic content scores 4 points. Original research scores 90+. Conviction statements add points.
Site-Wide Quality Modifier
Google boost that lifts ALL pages on high-authority domains. Building trust through transparent methodology improves your entire site's ranking potential.
Keyword Research
Finding search terms people use that relate to your business. Focus on low-competition keywords you can actually rank for, not high-volume terms where Semrush and Ahrefs already dominate.
Rank Tracking
Monitoring where your pages rank on Google for target keywords over time. Essential for measuring SEO progress and identifying problems when rankings drop.
Long-Tail Keywords
Search phrases with lower volume but higher intent. Example: "best AI SEO tool for startups" instead of "SEO tool". Easier to rank for and often convert better.
SERP (Search Engine Results Page)
The page Google shows when you search. Includes organic results, ads, featured snippets, and now AI Overviews. Your content competes for space here.
Featured Snippet
A highlighted answer box at the top of Google results. Usually answers a question directly. Good for visibility, but some studies show it reduces clicks to organic results.
Affiliate Link
A tracked link that credits the referrer (RankJudge) if someone clicks and purchases. Transparent disclosure is required. RankJudge uses affiliate links to fund testing and content.
Content Optimizer
Tool that analyzes top-ranking pages and suggests content improvements. Checks keyword usage, content structure, word count, and topical depth against competitors.
Backlink
A link from another website pointing to your site. High-quality backlinks improve authority and rankings. Search engines treat them as votes of confidence.
Domain Authority (DA)
A score (1-100) predicting how well a website will rank. High-authority domains rank easier and lift all pages site-wide. Built by accumulating quality backlinks.
White-Label Tool
Software you can rebrand and resell to clients under your own name. Search Atlas offers white-label dashboards so agencies can show clients branded reports.
SaaS (Software as a Service)
Cloud-based software you access via browser and pay monthly. Most SEO tools are SaaS. Contrast: desktop software you install locally.
API (Application Programming Interface)
A way for software to communicate. SEO tools use APIs to pull data from Google Search Console, Analytics, and other sources.
Schema Markup
Structured data code you add to pages to tell search engines what your content is about. Helps AI systems understand and cite your content more accurately.
Citation (in AI context)
When an AI system mentions your website by name as a source for information. Being cited in ChatGPT or Google AI Overview drives +120% more clicks than appearing in traditional search results alone.
Benchmark
Published data from authoritative sources measuring how something performs. RankJudge uses benchmarks (Ahrefs, Semrush, BrightEdge) to interpret tool selection, not original testing.
ROI (Return on Investment)
The profit or value returned from an investment relative to its cost. For SEO tools: time saved, rankings gained, or revenue generated compared to subscription cost.
Conversion Rate
Percentage of visitors who complete a desired action (buy, sign up, download). Not all traffic is equal; targeted, relevant traffic converts better.
AI Tool
Software that uses AI to help with SEO tasks like keyword research, content writing, optimization, or GEO tracking. Note: AI tools ≠ SEO agencies. RankJudge reviews software, not service providers.
